new this morning, the 2012 nobel peace prize has just been announced in norway. it is being awarded to the european union for its role in uniting the continent. the eu was founded back in 1957 with just six countries. it has expanded to 27 since the end of the cold war. the nobel announcement today played down the debt crisis ich is plaguing rope right now. the head of the selection committee had said it was a unanimous and fairly easy decision. >> that is a very interesting choice. >> i think i was thinking it would be an individual. >> i think a lot of us were. we were trying to figure out the names of the different people. >> you know, it is not just one person. it's group. kudos to them. >> more on that throughout the morning. the stakes are high in politics and sports. the vice presidential candidates go head to head in a

contentious debate and the washington nationals proved they are worth it forcing a deciding game five in the nlds. >> up first, let's talk nats. d.c. sports fans are in a frenzy. jayson werth's walkoff home run in the ninth inning against the cardinals has set up a decisive game five. the nats will have one of their aces on the mound. has that mile left your face since last night? >> no it hasn't. whey would it. gio gonzalez going tonight. how are we going to get through game four? wefigured out a way. this place was rocking. 1-0 right this. the nats only had three hits

presidential candidates. last night's face-off in kept ken pretty lively. >> vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan traded shots on a wide range of issues. sherry ly joins us now. >> vice president joe biden and the gop nominee paul ryan never let up over the 90 minute debate. they attacked each other over a wide range of circumstances showing sharp differences. they gave voters quite a showdown. the 69-year-old biden needed a spark with republican mitt romney gaining ground following last week's presidential debate. the 42-year-old ryan would not back down. they clashed over foreign and domestic policy. ryan said medicare and social security need to be reformed. he laid out he and romney's plan for the two programs and slammed obamacare while biden attacked the congressman's plan to reform it. >> they want to wipe this all out t also gave more benefits. any senior out there, ask yourself. do you have more benefits today? you do. if you are near the tone out hole, you have $600 more to

help your prescription drug costs. you get wellness visits without copays. they wipe all of this out and medicare becomes insolvent in 2016. >> give young are people when they become medicare eligible guaranteed coverage options that you can't be denied including traditional medicare. choose your plan and medicare subsidizes your premiums, not as much for the wealthy people, more coverage for middle income people and total out of pocket coverage for the poor and sick. we would rather have 50 million seniors determine how they get their coverage. >> biden and ryan interrupted one another throughout the entire debate. both sides seemed confident in their performance with president obama saying biden was terrific and likewise romney called ryan and congratulated him on his performance. while this is the only debate for biden and ryan, president obama and governor romney will

40s, upper 40s, probably mid- 40s by the end of the game. it will be so cool we have a freeze watch for parts of the area here north and west just north and west of the city for overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning. we're cool this morning. let's get started with it right now. 4 in washington. check out all the 30s breaking out. lots of clear skies and what we call radiational cooling. look at all those 30s. 37 in manassas. 38 at dulles. 36 in frederick. very cool temperature here north and west. looking at a bright sunny day today. generally sunny skies. we'll have a few clouds, cold front off to the north and west. you can see the cloud cover and a couple of showers. the showers will stay north of us again but the cloud cover will get in here later this afternoon. at least a few clouds. you will notice the winds and they will pick up behind this front out of the north and west gusting to about 25 to 30. we'll still have the breezes with us during game time tonight. the actual air temperature may be 50 but i think it will feel cooler than that later tonight. overnight tonight as the winds subside, our temperatures will

during discussions of a real estate deal. >> reporter: the board voted unanimously to publicly release a report that accuses former board member jim graham of undermining the integrity of the process of developing land once owned by the transit system. the land sits just south of florida avenue at eighth street northwest. graham was and still is a d.c. council member. the report accuses him of trying to dissuade a potential metro land developer by offering a lucrative deal involving d.c. business. >> councilmember graham indeed told warren williams of banneker ventures that he would consider supporting the bid of williams' come for the d.c. lottery contract if williams were to withdraw his bid for the florida avenue project. >> reporter: the report concludes jim graham's conduct, quote, undermined the integrity of the joint development process. asked about the promised lottery deal, jim graham

look. >> reporter: mei xiang was romping in her outdoor playpen, resting and sunning herself as zoo officials gathered to discuss the news. >> the cells in the liver died and the pattern would suggest lack of oxygen. >> reporter: not enough oxygen getting to the liver because the lung were not fully formed. the cub might have been premature but can't say for sure. mom seems to be getting back to normal. >> she has started eating at about 80% of her bamboo. >> reporter: she lost weight, down to about 220 pounds from 240 but her birthing history, file failed pregnancies, the birth of tai shan in 2005 followed by the death of latest female cub has given zoo officials pause for reflection. >> there is no decision about the future of mei xiang and tian tian, whether they will leave or remain.

back to the debate from last night. it was a spirited exchange between vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan on the subject of security at the american consulate in libya. the two went after each other in their only face to face match00 up. >> if we're hit by terrorists, we're going to call it for what it is, a terrorist attack. our ambassador in paris has a marine detachment guarding him. shouldn't we have one guarding our ambassador in benghazi, a place where we knew that there was an al-qaeda cell with arms? >> we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security. by the way, at the time, we were told exactly, we said exactly what the intelligence community told us, that they knew. >> the next debate between president obama and mitt romney is next tuesday night. tuesday
